In January, the Medicare Deductible will Start Over

Deductibles in January

January 2014, it will be time to collect deductibles.  Be sure to verify not only the coverage but if the deductible has been met or not when registering patients.  In 2014, the Medicare deductible is $147.00.

Scenario:

Sallie visits the physician on January 5, 2014. Sally has not met the deductible. Sally has a level 3 office visit: 99213.  The visit is $65.00.  Although your physician charged $65.00, Medicare will only allow participating physicians to charge the patient $47.90 per the fee schedule.  The receptionist should collect $47.90 from this patient.

If Sallie were to come in after her deductible is met, the staff would charge her 20% of the visit.  If she received a level 3 office visit in the amount of $65.00, what should you do?  Sallie should be charged 20% of the allowed amount which is $47.90.  The patient would owe:  $9.58.

  1. Hi,

I loved your simplicity that you have put on here. Most people don't really understand how Medicare works. They do not realize that there is a deductible for Medicare Part A and a separate deductible for Medicare Part B. The reason people don't know is because most people are on Medicare supplements that pay for the deductible. Get Medical Billing Services at California.
