Supreme Court Upholds Affordable Care Act
The Supreme Court of the United States announced June 28 a highly anticipated decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), in its entirety. The Court ruled that the individual mandate—a requirement that all individuals have health care coverage or face a penalty, and among the most controversial aspects of the 2010 health care reform act—was a tax, Constitutionally allowable under the Federal taxing authority. The vote was 5 to 4.
With the Court's ruling, the ACA is set to be enacted in full over the next several years.
