I keep loosing jobs...

Many of my students have started working in the medical industry.  I am very excited for them! However, some have ascertained jobs but have not been able to maintain them.  Why?

Many will blame the profession.  "Coding is not a good industry," they say.  Others blame their co-workers, the manager, or the physician. Perhaps those individuals should do a self-examination to determine why they can't keep a job!

1.  Can you take criticism?

I would love to perfect.  Unfortunately, I am not.  I mess up a lot! Sometimes, I have to be told the truth!   It may not be easy to swallow counsel when it is not rendered properly.   However, a self-examination can reveal if the complaint is valid.  In some cases, we may need to make adjustments.  Therefore, when others criticize you, listen even if it hurts.  Make the necessary changes, especially if your boss is making the complaint.  Don't argue and insist you are always right! Too much pride can cause problems.

2.  Are you always late?

Being late can be translated to mean, "I do not respect others."  It could also mean that "you are not dependable."  Plan your activities ahead of time. Get items such as clothing, lunch, gas for the car ready the day before.  Leave for work 15 to 30 minutes early.  If you are a mom, delegate tasks.  For example, my 7 year old has to pack his homework and snack in his book bag before going to bed.

3.  When you get to work.......start working

A lot of people come to work and eat breakfast, put on makeup, talk, and etc.  However, when you clock in you should be working.  Technically, you are stealing time.  Stand out from your co-workers by being diligent.  When you clock in, begin to fulfill your responsibilities for the day.

4.  Follow the dress code

"Well, So and So wore sandals so I will too"! Unfortunately, you are not so and so.  Follow the dress code.  Business attire is not 6 inch red heels and tank top showing the abdomen. Club attire should not be mistaken as business attire.  Tattoos should be covered as well.

5.  I am not going to stop smoking!

Well go ahead and kill yourself.  If you smoke, do it on your own time.  It's very irritating as a manager to watch an employee consistently go outside to smoke! We don't take 3 or 4 bathroom breaks so why take 3 or 4 smoking breaks? Get the habit under control so that you can do your job.  While you are outside smoking/on an unauthorized break, your co-worker is looking extremely
efficient.

6.  Gossip is not cute

Stop talking about others in a negative way.  Gossip is quite harmful and creates a negative atmosphere.  Work is not the place to discuss the private lives of others.  My philosophy is, "If you gossip about your co-worker, you will gossip about our patients." Learn to keep your mouth closed and walk away from the gossip.

7.  Don't tell your business

You should discuss work with your co-workers.  You should not discuss issues like marital problems, financial problems, or problems in other areas.  This can be used against you.  Some could say that you are not efficient due to these PROBLEMS you keep discussing with them.

8.  Background Check

If there is something in your background that should be disclosed, do so.  If the employer determines you have a negative background, he or she may terminate you.  Get your record expunged.  It's about $250 in NC.

9.  Laziness

Look at the ant.  Ants work all the time.  Do your job and do it well! If you are lacking in some skills, ask for assistance.  (Computer literacy is a must for billers and coders)

10.  Show up!

Some people treat their jobs like a vacation.  You can't come when you want too! You have to be there to be noticed!

Maybe you have lost a few jobs and did not ascertain a reason why from the employer.  Think: Were you gossiping? Were you telling all of YOUR unnecessary business? Did you show up and when you did were you on time? Did you really do a good job or did you take a lot of smoke breaks? Did you follow the dress code? Did you steal time?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, resolve to do better on the next job.
